Chapter Eighteen

GAVRIAN

Her presence in his home was surreal and Gavrian wondered if it was only a dream. After all, the sun had only just begun to set beyond the woods and on any other evening, he would still be asleep for a few more hours.

He had spent countless nights and days able only to dream of his beloved. When she evaded him well enough, he often returned to his home to attempt to capture her image on canvas.

To see her standing there in all her leather and armor was a taste of bliss Gavrian knew would only be fleeting. In moments she would likely turn and regard him with fury—disgust, even.

He would deserve it. There was nothing normal about this obsession. Perhaps she would deem him a deviant and end him there, finally.

Gavrian wanted to savor those last moments of silence before the storm. He wanted to remember, always, the soft part of her lips and the mix of awe and fear in her eyes.

In an instant, Alisel drew her sword when she faced him.

“What is this!?” Alisel demanded, “I… what manner of madness is all of this?!”

“It is what I do to keep from going any more mad than I already am. I am a painter. I can have anything I desire before me. I simply cannot truly touch it, though.”

“I… don’t know what to say about any of this. Was all of this a ruse? Some deal with Lady Elodie to trap me? She thought that she’d become indebted to a spirit.”

“No. Lady Elodie sought out an artist and I was bored. I attempted to leave you be, just as you demanded,” Gavrian eyed the paintings and sighed, “…I attempted to make do with the only version of you I could ever have for myself. I had no intention of having you lured here.”

She stared with large, blue eyes—a crystalline blue that made him think of the midday summer skies he’d not seen in over three hundred years.

Gavrian drew nearer, wanting only to stroke her skin, caress her face, to touch her hair. He longed for the taste of her body that he’d been blessed with weeks ago in Rosenholm. He wanted to hold her and never let go—to keep her in the cold, dark eternity before him.

“Alisel… I need you. I need to be with you. I can’t bear the thought of time or threat stealing you from me. When you’re in the world, I am… alive again.”

Alisel backed away and hissed, “…you’re mad. Obsessed!”

“I am,” Gavrian whispered, “…and I am obsessively, hopelessly in love with you.”

“This isn’t love. You want only to claim and possess what pleases your eye. You have no idea who I even am.”

“I want to know you. I want all of you. Every detail of you. Every beauty and every flaw, every conquest and every failure. I want you, your body, your every wish and whim, I want it all and I want it for all of time.”

Alisel held her blade between Gavrian, stopping him in his tracks.
